Paropkaar Programme (International volunteering)
Volunteering towards Sustainable Development
Paropkaar, a Sanskrit word meaning to serve others unconditionally, was AFP’s longest and most defining project. After five successful years and 111 volunteer placements, it has now come to completion.
Our international volunteer programme provided a structured opportunity for individuals to share skills with grassroots organisations in India and experience exciting new challenges. It contributed to the development of the community, organisation and the volunteer.
It was an innovative programme and a catalyst in reaching out to the British Asian community. Through our specialised training and extensive support, our volunteers were able to share their skills at a grassroots level with local communities in India, as well as connect with their heritage. These placements were demanding. Volunteers worked in difficult settings and with limited resources. However it has been a fantastic personal and professional journey for all.
AFP partners with grassroots based organisations in 4 states in India – Delhi, Gujarat, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh. Our partner organisations identified specific skills which were required from volunteers to address their needs. Paropkaar volunteers worked in a variety of roles in the areas of education, livelihoods, participation and governance .
The volunteer placements have led to positive long term impact for our Partner Organisations and their beneficiaries. To find out more, please read the volunteer stories below:

Our emphasis is now on raising awareness in the UK of social development issues around the world, with a particular focus on India. Gyaan Yatra is the stage beyond Paropkaar, that supports the British Asian community to inspire others to get involved in promoting change.
