AFP staff wins award
AFP Staff Member Sheetal Ramesh Shah represented the organisation at the Young Third Sector Thinker of the Year 2009. She was one of 18 young people working in the charity sector selected to attend the event.
Each of the delegates presented a six-minute paper arguing a case on a topic of current interest or controversy and then delivered a three-minute presentation without notes on a separate subject.
At the event Sheetal’s paper on Ethical Consumerism was well received and she won ‘Best On the Spot’ for her impromptu speech. Of this On the Spot, the adjudicator said: ‘A magical essay drawn from her Kenyan childhood, contrasting the innocent fear of a butterfly caught in her mouth with more profound subsequent fears about the fate of her country. It had the quality of a short story. It was near-perfect.’
